Reader, I'm back in one of my favourite places on earth—the fresh mountain air, towering evergreens, and crystal-clear lakes bring my soul to rest. For two years, I’ve been waiting to return. The best part? The shuttle bus that hauls you and your bike to the top of the mountain for a gravity-fuelled ride down. Pure nature. Pure joy. For me, it's like being seven years old on Christmas morning. As I arrived at the top of the mountain for the moment I've been dreaming of... disaster struck! My bike tire popped. After 700+ days of waiting, I was absolutely crushed. As I sulked in the parking lot, a stranger approached with a glint in his eye and empathy in his tone. He offered, "Maybe this is a gift for you." What happened next blew my mind... I found myself in a gathering of locals paying tribute to Victor, a beloved bear who was "put down" after an unnecessary encounter with a tourist who got too close trying to make a video for social media (she was unharmed). One-by-one, storytellers, musicians, and Native Americans shared reflections that moved me deeply. I never knew bears and people had bonds like this; that mountain communities hold so dear the relationship with nature and animals. This gathering taught me so much, and, had everything gone as I planned... I would have missed it all! A stranger’s words shifted my perspective in a second, and with that, shifted everything. What seemed like a mess became a gift. Sometimes, I think the universe redirects us to something we’re meant to see. Moral to the story? Look for the gift.
